WHY is poverty so hard to escape? For entire societies, and at the level
of the individual, this must be one of the most basic questions that
development economists seek to answer. Esther Duflo, MIT professor and
one of the authors of the book “Poor Economics” is probably the
best-known development economist working today. Last week, she reflected
on this and other questions about the nature of poverty at a duo of
lectures at Harvard University.
