BNDES atrapalha competitividade do Brasil diz Banco Mundial

World Bank Says Brazil Gives Too Much Stuff Away

Forbes

• Brazil has too many bank subsidies and because of this, the country is not competitive enough. So says the World Bank, an institutional that is ironically led by countries with near zero interest rates and some of the biggest farm subsidies in the world. Nevertheless, the World Bank’s analysts took Brazil to task on Monday for its lending incentive programs at the big state banks and BNDES, the country’s development bank which is so big, its loan portfolio dwarfs that of its new, largest critic in Geneva. According to the World Bank, subsidized loans from BNDES in particular, coupled with tax incentives for major industry, hindered the country’s integration “into the global economy” and “created ...

Keynesianismo é consumerismo

"Historically it was Keynesianism that brought the emphasis on consumption into economics. Before the Keynesian revolution the standard belief among economists was that production was the source of demand and that encouraging saving and production was the way to generate economic growth. This was more or less the correct understanding of Say’s Law of Markets. (See also James C. Ahiakpor’s article in the current Freeman). As J. B. Say himself wrote in the early nineteenth c...entury:

""[T]he encouragement of mere consumption is no benefit to commerce; for the difficulty lies in supplying the means, not in stimulating the desire of consumption; and we have seen that production alone furnishes those means. Thus it is the aim of good government to stimulate production, of bad government to encourage consumption."
"Of course “stimulating production” need mean nothing more than leaving producers free to seek out profits as they see fit within the standard classical-liberal framework of law. It does not mean government should artificially benefit producers any more than it should encourage consumption.
"The great irony is that leftists frequently argue that capitalism equals “consumerism.” They think defenders of free markets believe that more consumption promotes economic growth; thus we are charged with providing the ideological cover that justifies the consumerism they see as deadening lives and wasting resources. What the leftist critics miss is that economists never saw consumption as the driving force of economic growth and prosperity until the Keynesian criticisms of free markets became ascendant."

A economia de escravidão

"This ground-breaking book adds an economic angle to a traditionally moral argument, demonstrating that slavery has never promoted economic growth or development, neither today nor in the past. While unfree labor may be lucrative for slaveholders, its negative effects on a country’s economy, much like pollution, drag down all members of society. Tracing the history of slavery around the world, from prehistory through the US Antebellum South to the present day, Wright illustra...tes how slaveholders burden communities and governments with the task of maintaining the system while preventing productive individuals from participating in the economy.

"Historians, economists, policymakers, and anti-slavery activists need no longer apologize for opposing the dubious benefits of unfree labor. Wright provides a valuable resource for exposing the hidden price tag of slaving to help them pitch antislavery policies as matters of both human rights and economic well-being."

A geração perdida da Venezuela

Venezuela is at risk of losing an entire generation

Business Insider

Venezuelans angry with their government, a deteriorating economy, and a seemingly intractable political impasse marked 100 days of protest on Sunday - demonstrations that have often turned violent and in which more than 90 people have been killed. The protest movement that emerged at the end of April is not the first to appear. Venezuelans took to the streets for several weeks in spring 2014 in protests that left more than 40 people dead. Protracted discontent in Venezuelan has also spurred another kind of movement: the migration of Venezuelan to neighboring and nearby countries in search food, medicine, work, and security. Outmigration has moved in waves over the past 20 years. Many elites left ...

Japão - política monetária

Japan Has Entered The Next Phase: Unlimited Money Printing

Forbes

Investors have been watching Japan for over a decade now, wondering what happens to a country that has a debt-to-GDP ratio of 234%–too big to realistically pay off. We are starting to get the answer. For review, Japan was the first country in the modern central banking era to begin a policy of quantitative easing–an unconventional form of monetary policy that is used when interest rates have already been lowered to the zero bound. Quantitative easing, which involves the purchase of “printed” money to buy government bonds, was widely viewed in Japan as a failure, but what most people don’t understand about Japan’s early QE experiments is that they were very small–less than $20 billion a month. ...

Déficit comercial americano

U.S. trade deficit is getting bigger

CNN Money

President Trump wants America's trade deficit to get smaller, but it's going in the opposite direction. The deficit through May increased to $233 billion for the year, according to U.S. trade data released on Thursday. That's 13% bigger than the $206 billion deficit over the same time a year ago. Trade will be a central issue during Trump's visit to Germany for the G20 Summit on Friday. Germany's foreign minister warned this week that Trump could start a trade war with Europe. Trump has also criticized several G20 nations -- China, Germany, Mexico and Canada -- for what he calls unfair trade practices. And a potential trade war over steel still looms. Trump has often blamed bad trade deals for ...
