SOCIO-ECONOMIC SYSTEMS ANALYSIS
PPGS - Programa de Pós--Graduação em Sociologia da UFS
Semestre 2019/I - Segundas 8-12 h
The analysis of alternatives lies at the heart of socio-economic systems analysis. It tries to widen the scope beyond technical and economic feasibility and includes the analysis of social acceptance and risk perception, and the degrees of acceptance and rejection of existing institutions and reform projects.
Socio-economic systems analysis thrives to go beyond the statistical quantification or qualitative assessments to include the search for the “systems-character” or “principle of order” of the institution under review.
In the seminar, we will study the techniques of socio-economic systems analysis and apply our finding to healthcare (medicine), pension systems, and education. We will study voting systems (democratic method and sortition) and the market competition as procedures to organize socio-economic institutions.
The seminar language will be English. The requirement to pass is active participation and the elaboration of a research paper (in English or Portuguese).
