“Happy 90th Birthday, Professor Israel Kirzner”:
February 13th of this year marked the 90thbirthday of Dr. Israel M.Kirzner, who was born in 1930, one of the leading contributors to “Austrian Economics” in the post-World War II era, and the greatest living member of the Austrian School of Economics.
In my article I explain that it is difficult to imagine the revival of the Austrian School over the last half century if not for his outstanding writings on entrepreneurship and the dynamic market process; and on the meaning of human action and the role of entrepreneurial “alertness” in bringing about innovative change and market coordination of economy-wide supply and demand.
Professor Kirzner has been equally insightful in applying and extending the ideas of Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich A. Hayek in challenging the assumptions and presumptions in many forms of government intervention and regulation in a free market, and parallel to this, his emphasis on the importance of individual liberty as an end in itself in a free society and as the fundamental means through which human betterment is made possible.
So, Happy 90th Birthday, Professor Kirzner, with thanks and warmest wishes for many more years to come.
