Just please listen to just the first few minutes (though I recommend the entire interview) and especially Wagner's retelling of his first day in class. This was my experience with the great James M Buchanan as well. He was committed to democracy in a most serious way, and restricted the role of the economist accordingly. And you can see this in Buchanan's first JPE article and you can see it in his Nobel address. It's so strange to me that folks don't get it. We economists must cease offering advice as if to a benevolent despot, and recognize that the economist is in no privileged position in the public discourse in collective action.
